BH EnergyGap’s Partner, Keith Riley was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the National Recycling Awards 2013.

Keith, having worked in the waste industry for over 20 years was praised for pioneering partnership working, creating an integrated approach to waste management developing a network of Material Recycling Facilities, Composting Sites, Household Waste Recycling Sites and Energy Recovery Facilities. Providing the maximum possible amount of resources that could be recovered from a diverse mix of waste in a deliverable and sustainable way was a model for others to follow.

The award was presented by the editor of Materials Recycling World (MRW) Robin Latchem at the Awards ceremony with an audience of over 600 at the plush Hilton Hotel, Park Lane, London.

On receiving the award, Keith Riley commented that he was honoured that his work had been recognised, especially in terms of energy recovery and continued

“It is very special to me, because over the last 20 years I have had the privilege to be at the heart of this dynamic and developing industry, and to witness it growing from a vision in peoples’ minds to what it is today – and you only need to look around this room to see what that is.

“Recycling has grown into a substantial industry but is now maturing once again. We now have the circular economy to look forward to, and I believe that this concept has bags of potential and very much hope to assist in its development”.

He described challenges ahead for the waste sector: “Those involved in exports have been coming to terms with China’s Green Fence regime, maintaining the age-old but crucial debate about quality standards.

“In the longer term, how do we maintain a balance between the traditional needs of public health and environmental protection and the growing challenge of extracting higher value and financing increasingly high-tech developments when there is less money around to pay for it? This is a key issue but you are best-placed to meet it”.
